Selena Tatum Isles

Trinidadian. Born 1979. Raised on her father's vinyl and the culture that held four elements at once. Trained in design at the Academy of Design in Montreal, then the New School — before the graffiti walls felt more honest than the classroom. Wrote ACHE79 on whatever held still long enough — because she ached for things she couldn't yet name. DJ Pebbles first, then reborn as DJ Seriousblack after her time in Thailand. Later held a dual scholarship at Concordia and the Université de Paris. Two post-graduate bodies of work — one on punk and hip hop as inherited rage, one on yoga and colonial extraction. Now an independent scholar working on the Kleshas: why we act against our own flourishing. A writer in the tradition of essay and imaginative work — Field Notes on Substack, and Future Paradise, a novella in edit. Neuro-anthropologist. DJ Seriousblack

The origin story. Not nostalgia — living archaeology. The root system that fed everything that came after.

The full root system

Before the scholarship, before the frameworks, before the podcast — there was the design school she left for the walls. The tag ACHE79, written on whatever held still long enough, because she ached for things she couldn't yet name. The vinyl crates her father kept. The turntable at sixteen. The room full of people waiting to be read.

First she was DJ Pebbles. Then Thailand rebuilt her — the monks marked her chest with a seal, and she came back as DJ Seriousblack. Graffiti and DJing ran parallel the whole time, two elements of the same culture, both forms of pattern recognition on different surfaces. She taught graffiti to children and studied its cultural anthropology. Nothing was ever separate. Everything came from the same root.
